WRY CRIPS IN 2017: SOME UPDATE

THIS BLOGSITE CONTAINS A LOG OF CHRONOLOGICAL HAPPENINGS FOR THE WRITERS & PERFORMERS OF WRY CRIPS DISABLED WOMEN'S READER'S THEATER WORKS.

WRY CRIPS WAS A BIT DORMANT BETWEEN 2012 to 2017 UNTIL A PERFORMANCE WAS ORGANIZED, REHEARSED AND PRESENTED TO THE PUBLIC IN JUNE OF 2017.

BY LATE SUMMER OF 2017, THEATRICAL DIRECTOR MICHAELA GOLDHABER JOINED IN TO HELP DEVELOP AND DIRECT A PIECE CALLED, 'IRETONIA: A SCI FI FANTASY.'
FOUR YEARS IN THE MAKING, 'IRETONIA' WAS PERFORMED IN BERKELEY, CA. ON THE STAGE OF LIVE OAK THEATER OPENING ON FRIDAY AUGUST 18th TO A SMALL BUT APPRECIATIVE AUDIENCE.

ON SATURDAY NIGHT AUGUST 19th, THE PERFORMANCE WAS VIDEOTAPED.

ANOTHER TWO PERFORMANCES WERE SET FOR FRIDAY AUGUST 25th and SATURDAY AUGUST 26th (SEE MARQUE BELOW) AND FOR ANYONE WHO WAS LOCAL & COULD MAKE IT, YOU EXPERIENCED SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL. LIVE OAK THEATER IS A WONDERFUL INTIMATE THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE SPACE THAT IS ONE OF THOSE HIDDEN GEMS OF THE EAST BAY!

IRETONIA: A SCI FI FANTASY  was dedicated to          LESLIE GORDON. More on Leslie can be read HERE as well.

WRY CRIPS WAS FOUNDED BY PATTY OVERLAND, JUDITH SMITH and LAURA RIFKIN, and has been making theater with disabled women for over 30 years. This is the first time Wry Crips has written a play as an ensemble.

WRY CRIPS IS SEEKING NEW MEMBERS NOW!


Wry Crips is a Berkeley-based disabled women's reader's theater group. It began in the early 1980's, has had several performances over the years, was dormant for several years and got revitalized by one of the original founders, Patty Overland, in early 2011. Wry Crips worked on one piece all year to produce a performance in November of 2011 that was attended by almost 100 people on a beautiful afternoon. (You can see youtube clips of the performance and

Wry Crips is open for new members NOW.
     

Meetings will be necessary to get through all the member's writing materials, selection of the production theme, and then rehearsals leading right up to the production. A theme is being chosen this next meeting on Feb. 26.

Qualifications for Wry Crips Members:

1) Females 18 and over who identify and have grown up as female and identify strongly with their either hidden or visible disability.

2) Older Females (30-and-up) who have lived their lives as females for 100% of their adult lives, and identify as female and strongly with their either hidden or visible disability are welcome.

3) Either of the above who also write prose, poetry, short stories, plays and more.

4) Participants must live in the Berkeley area or be able to get to the meetings and rehearsals on time and stay for the full amount of time (2 hours each meeting X twice-a-month).

5) Wry Crips is open to deaf women or hearing impaired women, but that participant would need to provide a sign language interpreter for the meetings. (One will be provided for performance time come November).

6) Wry Crips is seeking a committed director who has had experience equal to working on a minimum of one production prior-to, or, needs to fill out more experience in their resume, or a more experienced director who might be looking for a passion project to work on.

Interviews are being shot for an introduction that includes some original founders talking about the background of Wry Crips, and will be up by Nov. 30, 2011.

Over 56 audience members enjoyed the readings of the above women for a total of 90 minutes!

WRY CRIPS exists to nurture the neglected dreams & talents of disabled women. We are open to all disabled women who want the opportunity to work & learn with other disabled women.

Founded in 1985 by Patty Overland, Judy Smith and Dr.Laura Rifkin.
Wry Crips' first performance was in March, 1986 and was attended by over 200 enthusiastic women.
Patty Overland is beginning a new version of Wry Crips and looking to start with working on a lot of the material that already exists within the vast catalogue created years ago by early members of the group.


Wry Crips is looking for actors and writers - no prior experience necessary. We are also looking for ASL interpreters and directors who've had at least some experience and/or knowledge of directing.
